I want to start a side business to earn extra money and this looks like a good option — low start-up costs and low overhead.

As long as there are enough people with enough money to pay someone else to do something they’d rather not do themselves, this seems like a winning idea. The size of the town seems big enough, as long as the demographics work and provided there is not already a lot of competition in this area. My one recommendation is to set it up so you can get paid before you do the work or as soon as you do the work, because collecting afterwards is going to be tricky. In a service business like this, you will encounter a certain number of deadbeats. Also, be real clear on your fee structure, including things like charges for bad checks. You may want to check with your bank for a check verification service. Don’t let people take advantage of you. Offer great service, be dependable, and hopefully your customers will recommend you to other people to help you grow your business. This really is a great kind of business and I applaud you for undertaking it.
